This park reserve just west of the Twin Cities in Maple Plain offers a huge array of activities. You can fish, swim, boat, or relax on the beach of Lake Independence as well as hike on nearly 24 miles of trail and bike on 12.5 miles of trail. This park even has a 9 hole executive golf course! You can stay overnight -- one of the closest camping opportunities to the Twin Cities -- at one main campground and a couple group campgrounds in addition to the Near-Wilderness Settlement.
While hiking is permitted on the trail around the lake, it is better suited for horseback riding and bicycling -- it is monotonous on foot. Stick to the trails near the Marshview Group Camp or the main campground for the best experience.
