Rating: ★★★★★(5/5) - Must Visit
On the far western edge of North Dakota located along Interstate 94, you'll find Theodore Roosevelt National Park, named in honor of the conservation-minded 26th President. Preserving over 70,000 acres of badlands, you can enjoy viewing the many species of prairie wildlife thriving in the park, such as prairie dogs, bison, wild horses, and elk. Explore the park from over 100 miles of hiking trails or by driving the 36 mile scenic loop. Camping is available in two developed campsites -- one in each unit -- in the park or at nearby state parks or national forest campgrounds. Lodging is also available in the adjacent town of Medora.
The easiest trails are located along the scenic drive, short hikes generally less than 1 mile in length often with educational signage and scenic views. Escape the crowds and explore the wilderness areas of the park on any of the longer trails. In the South Unit, the Lone Tree Loop is a longer hike navigating through remote parts of the badlands to the top of a grassy plateau and to a gigantic prairie dog town that seems to extend for miles, all while enjoying fantastic views. In the North Unit, Caprock Coulee is an excellent moderate length hike with outstanding views from the top of the badlands.
